Our First Anime Convention & What Organisers Need to Know

On 26 September, Greenwich Borough Hall welcomed its very first anime convention, a lively, open-doors community celebration that brought together fans of all ages and introduced our historic venue to an entirely new audience.
A Day of Energy, Creativity, and Community
From the moment the doors opened, the hall was filled with vibrant energy. As an open-doors event, the convention attracted a wonderfully diverse crowd, welcoming everyone from young families and curious newcomers to seasoned cosplayers and passionate fans.
Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed a full, dynamic programme:
Artist & Vendor Stalls: Independent makers and creators filled the space with handmade posters, custom keychains, stickers, and unique illustrated artwork.
Live Video Game Music: A live band took to the stage, performing high-energy sets of favourite video game soundtracks.
Cosplay Competition: Creative fans took centre stage to showcase their costumes and character performances in a friendly, supportive showcase.
Interactive Paint Wall: A large communal paint wall gave attendees the chance to add their own drawings, characters, and messages across the day.
Live Dance Showcases: Vibrant dance routines brought movement and enthusiastic crowd participation to the main hall.
Asian Food: Authentic Asian street food stalls kept attendees fuelled and added fantastic flavour to the event.
The day highlighted just how adaptable Greenwich Borough Hall is, easily handling live performances, market stalls, creative workshops, and food service under one roof.

Planning an anime convention? Here’s what to consider
Running a successful pop-culture gathering means balancing retail, live entertainment, and constant crowd movement. Here are the essential considerations for event organisers planning a convention in our venue:
Layout and Audience Flow: Create clear, distinct zones for stalls, stage viewing, and interactive areas. Keeping wide walkways between vendor tables ensures attendees can browse comfortably without bottlenecks.
Technical Production: Coordinate your sound and lighting plans early. Balance audio levels so live band performances and stage contests carry excitement without overwhelming conversations in the market stalls.
Accessibility and Safeguarding: Cater to a multi-generational audience with step-free access across all spaces, clear signage, visible information points, and fully briefed event staff.
Food and Catering: Position hot food and dining spaces sensibly away from delicate handmade art and merchandise, while ensuring plenty of waste and recycling bins throughout the venue.
Scheduling: Stagger headline moments—such as the cosplay contest and band sets—to maintain an exciting rhythm throughout the day and distribute footfall evenly.
Communication with the Venue Team: Work closely with our operations team from the start. Sharing floor plans, schedule timelines, and load-in needs in advance guarantees smooth coordination from setup to pack-down.
